Email Marketing: Getting Them To Open Your Email Newsletter

A question we get a lot here at TrafficWave.net is “How do I improve my open rate?”.

There are a couple of techniques I want to go over in this article that will dramatically increase your open rates for your email marketing messages.

First, let’s take a look at a real subject line I use in one of my own campaigns and then break down the two critical elements of success:

Improve Your Email Marketing Open Rates

There are two elements to this particular subject line.

  1. The first element is personalization. I’ve made sure that each message that goes out is personally addressed to the prospect by name. I did this by placing my cursor in the Subject Line window and then clicking “Add Token”. Since this particular autoresponder campaign collects the full name as a single field, I use the **NAME** token. If you collect first and last name separately, you can use just the **FIRSTNAME** token to automatically have the system enter your subscriber’s first name.
  2. The next element is that my subject line asks a question. Of course, I already know the answer to the question but the point is to get my reader thinking about the question before they even open the email.

Why is this technique effective in improving your email marketing open rate?

The message is personalized. We are all more likely to open a message that is addressed specifically to us.

The message creates curiosity by asking a question that we know is already on the prospect’s mind.

Your subject line could also offer to teach your subscriber’s something by starting with a “How To Stop Snoring”

Your subject line could make a special announcement, such as “50% Off Sale Starts Today”

Your subject line could focus on a popular news story or current event, such as “Did You See This On The News?”

Try some different techniques and track your open rates to see which of these work to increase your open rates.

  • Thanks Brian, always good to get the inside scoop on how to get better results from using my Trafficwave autoresponder to increase my sales from the guy who owns the company. :-) . I like headlines that cause emotion, make the cry, make them sad, make them mad, make them happy, if you can cause emotion in the subject line it will get opened.

Sometimes it’s helpful if you use a headline that is targeted to a specific niche like
Internet marketers. Or you can zero in on the specific people on your list that are
involved in a program like say GDI. So a headline to target those folks on your list
you might use a headline like:

From Joe – **FIRSTNAME** are you a GDI Failure?

    Or

GDI Failures please report to free training tonight **FIRSTNAME**.

The folks who have failed to create any success with that program GDI will
more than likely open the email and will probably attend the meeting to find
out how to become a GDI success.

Good post Brian, keep them coming,

Oh, I like those, Joe! I bet your open rate is really high when you get them stirred up like that!

  • Brian great tips and I love number 2, people love to answer questions and this immediately gets them interested and thinking as you say.

I always start each email with same, short phrase thus my subscribers know what to look for if they are interested in my messages, this means the rest of the subject line is less crucial but tip would be a good addition to my marketing.

  • Great tips Brian,
Some times we get so busy and ignore the very
    core important things.

    Thanks

  • Thank you TrafficWave! Awesome post and I use a combination of all of these methods all of the time. The most important thing about email marketing is remembering you are marketing to an actual person. When you are marketing to a person of course and email with his or her name it will grab attention.

Many marketers want to start by focusing on gaining attention, and that’s why he or she may write crummy headlines that sound something similar to, “Free money Open now.” You can not play with people’s emotions and expect him or her not to reject you. The “how to” example is another awesome example, because leaders respond to “how to’s.” A leader will always understand the value of education and is always willing to learn something. Thank you again for this blog (first day on it), and I love the blessing TrafficWave provides. It is one of the best business investments I have ever made, and one of my best assets.
